Most women will experience
some of these or other hormone related problems. Today,
millions of women concerned about aging must decide whether
or not to undergo synthetic hormone replacement therapy and
suffer its side effects.
In order to help women
better understand hormone replacement therapy, pharmacists
Henry Herring and Beverly Clark address your questions and
concerns about menopause and the "Natural" Hormone
Replacement option by providing personal consultations. They
will work with your physician in providing you with an
individualized therapy regimen.
If you suffer from any of
these symptoms, Bio-Identical "Natural" Hormone Replacement
Therapy could be right for you.
Bio-Identical HRT for Women
Estrogens
- Are a group
of related hormones, each with a unique profile
-
of
activity. The three principle estrogens in human females are Estrone (E1), Estradiol (E2), and Estriol (E3).
- Are often
prescribed in combination to re-establish a normal
physiologic balance. The use of one or more of these
hormones is referred to as Estrogen Replacement Therapy
(ERT).
Bio-identical estrogens have been shown to be
effective:
- For the
treatment of menopausal symptoms
- For the
treatment of postmenopausal problems including vaginal
atrophy, dryness, or infections, painful intercourse,
and various conditions of the urinary tract.
- In decreasing
the risk of osteoporosis and colorectal cancer
Progesterone
- Is commonly
prescribed for perimenopausal women to counteract
“estrogen dominance”
- Minimizes the
risk of endometrial cancer in women who are receiving
estrogen
- Is preferred
by women who had previously taken synthetic progestins,
according to a Mayo Clinic study
- May enhance
the beneficial effect of estrogen on lipid and
cholesterol profiles and exercise-induced myocardial
ischemia (reduced oxygen supply to the heart muscle) in
postmenopausal women (in contrast to medroxyprogesterone
acetate)
- Therapy may
minimize the side effects associated with synthetic
progestins.
Androgens
Testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) may be added
to a woman’s HRT to alleviate recalcitrant menopausal
symptoms and further protect against osteoporosis, loss of
immune function, obesity, and diabetes. A decline in serum
testosterone is associated with hysterectomy, and there are
age-related gender-independent declines in DHEA and DHEA-sulfate.
Additionally, ERT may cause relative ovarian and adrenal
androgen deficiency, creating a rationale for concurrent
physiologic androgen replacement. Recalcitrant
menopausal symptoms such as low libido, low energy and
reduce muscle toning may also be symptomatic.

The Wisdom of Menopause
by
Christiane Northrup
"It is no secret that relationship
crises are a common side effect of menopause..." (more)
Menopause doesn't have to be a dreaded curse of aging
during which we can look forward only to hot flashes and
whacked-out hormonal mood swings. According to
Christiane Northrup, M.D. (Women's
Bodies, Women's Wisdom),
menopause often marks the beginning of a woman's most
sexually passionate, creatively inspired, and
professionally productive phase of life.
